Here's how to take your yoga practice to new heights during the pandemic

We come to yoga from all walks of life, our bodies are all shapes and sizes, and we all have our own goals for what we want to get out of our practice. Maybe you came to yoga to gain flexibility, maybe you want to tone up, or maybe you’re working on being more mindful. (In many cases, the answer is all of the above.) With each of these goals, there is always room for us to grow and reach new heights in our practice even during the pandemic. But have you tried something new lately to create space for that growth?

Branch Out

Have you ever done tree pose - and truly spread your “branches” to the sky to get a really amazing stretch? In this case, branching out is all about trying different types of yoga, and stretching yourself in this way feels just as good! If you typically go for Vinyasa flow, you may benefit from upgrading to Power Vinyasa. Or perhaps trying out 26+2 or Yin Yoga would be beneficial for you. All of these yoga styles are offered in our weekly in-person and online classes here at here at Flex.

Aside from trying out different types of yoga, consider incorporating new poses into your routine to reap more benefits. For example, the Wheel pose stretches your spine and can banish belly fat and anxiety. To tone your upper body and improve your balance, give the Side Plank a try.

Cultivate Your Home Practice

Going to regularly scheduled classes keeps you motivated, and there’s nothing like the vibe of a room full of yogis. In fact, Mind Body Green recommends practicing in a studio at least three times a week. But when the pandemic throws a wrench in your yoga schedule, the easiest way to complement your in-studio sessions is to practice at home. Take the time to create a dedicated space, clutter free and complete with all the props you need. Keep your entire house organised and clean as well, as clutter can make you feel agitated and anxious which can make it more difficult to focus on your practice.

One thing you may want to include is a spot to dock your phone, and maybe even speakers to connect it to. Yoga apps, and even live yoga sessions, take the guesswork out of home practice. Plus, a guided session is a great way to get exposure (and the push you need) to try new poses. Check out our schedule of weekly yoga classes (online and offline), which are held in-studio and via Zoom.

Find Your Savasana Bliss

Many of us settle into our practice with 1,000 different thoughts fleeting through our minds. Practicing yoga helps us reset our bodies and calm our minds, but your time on the yoga mat isn’t complete if you skip Savasana. Not only is it an essential part of your practice, but did you know there are ways you can be intentional about how you experience it? For example, Shape recommends to put a block on your stomach if you want to focus on meditation. If you want to feel completely relaxed, comfort and coziness are key.

Reaching a new level in your yoga practice during the pandemic can mean many different things. Focusing on Savasana helps lower your stress levels, while working toward new poses helps you build greater strength and balance. No matter what your personal goals are, every yogi can benefit from trying these ideas that give your practice the chance to evolve during these difficult and unprecedented times.
